The Greensboro City Council consists of a mayor, 3 members at large, and one representative from each of five districts.  Beginning in fall 2017, terms are four years.  The City Council is responsible for the Police and Fire Departments, public transportation, libraries, Parks and Recreation, the Historical Museum, zoning and building enforcement, housing code enforcement, affordable housing, neighborhood renewal, the Greensboro Coliseum, public pools and the Aquatics Center, street maintenance, water and sewer, waste recycling, public parking, and economic development, city budget and taxes.  It also supervises the City Manager.
